BOYES HOT SPRINGS -- The iconic Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa, on Sonoma Highway just outside the city of Sonoma, has been transformed following a comprehensive makeover process over the first nine months of this year.
The $10.7 million renovation involved major upgrades to the lobby, wine room, bar, Michelin star-rated Sante restaurant and 97 of the resort's 227 guest rooms, including its noted Heritage Suites and meeting facilities. The cost of construction and nonconstruction services totaled $3.35 million.
Outside, major changes were made to the arrival perspective, landscape, signage, pedestrian walkways and circulation patterns.
SB Architects, the project architectural firm responsible for the transformation, is also working with the Sonoma County Landmarks Commission on an exterior addition proposal intended to upgrade the guest-arrival experience and lobby access.
The redesign also included improved acoustic privacy, accessibility and upgrades to the technical infrastructure of the facility.
Additional renovation work is scheduled for the spa over the next two years.

The intent of the project was to better align the historic resort with Fairmont's brand position and standards, while also elevating the guest appearance of the famous landmark with elements designed to attract and appeal to a younger demographic.
The SB Architectural design team included Kirk Nix Associates on interior design of the lobby and restaurants, Brayton Hughes Design Studios for the meeting rooms and Heritage Suites, and Hadley Design Studio and JLP Landscape Contracting for landscape planning and design treatments.
The general contractor for this project was Petaluma-based Midstate Construction Company. Overall construction management was provided by Sonoma-based LandPlan Co.
Carey Watermark Investors, Inc., a New York-based real estate investment trust, purchased a 75-percent majority interest in the Sonoma Mission Inn & Spa in July worth $73.3 million. This transaction, financed with $44 million in debt, places the value of the resort at $97.1 million.
Fairmont Hotels & Resorts has a long-term agreement to continue operating the resort and retains a 25 percent interest in the property.
The four-star resort is one of the largest employers in Sonoma Valley, with some 500 workers, and is also the county's top revenue-grossing hotel.
The 86-year-old hotel was built in 1927 over a geothermal spring on the site of the former Boyes Hot Springs Hotel built in 1895.
The inn served as a rehabilitation facility for the U.S. Navy during World War II and later as a training site for sports teams.
