Napa’s Meritage to break ground on new hotel

As part of a two-phase plan, The Meritage Resort & Spa in Napa Valley plans to break ground soon on a new hotel on nearby land that was purchased four years ago.

Located across the street from the Resort, The Meritage Commons will feature 145 guest rooms, including 39 suites, an outdoor pool area, and a food and wine village.

Groundbreaking is set to take place Friday, April 29.

The four-story hotel will introduce new amenities for guests and residents including nine tasting rooms, an expansive event lawn for social gatherings and concerts, a demonstration kitchen, and boutique market. The Meritage’s wine brand, Trinitas Cellars, and Foley Family Wines are among the wineries set to have a tasting room on site.

Trinitas Cellars is currently poured for visitors in a tasting venue that’s part of a 22,000-square-foot cave constructed in the hillside behind the hotel.

Phase two of the project will add 10,000 square feet of ballroom space and an exhibition hall to the west, next to the Meritage Spa, according to city planners.

Pacific Hospitality Group, the owner of the resort, purchased the 9.3 acres of vacant land in 2012, which sits at the northeast corner of Bordeaux Way and Napa Valley Corporate Drive. According to county records, the current assessed value of the property is $5.6 million.

At the time of the purchase, owners said they wanted to preserve the resort feel of The Meritage and adjoining Vina Bello Resort, a 182 luxury condominium development owned by Shell Vacations.

“We didn’t want some other group buying the land across the street and building something not related to a hotel. We didn’t want industrial buildings across the street,” said Kory Kramer, Pacific Hospitality vice president for acquisitions and development.

Prior to purchasing the property, the Resort completed a roughly $40 million expansion that doubled the number of rooms and brought the meeting space to more than 50,000 square feet. The Meritage also has 15 acres of winegrape vines, a spa in the cave, restaurants and cafes.
