With the addition of two high-end resorts, Calistoga is on its way to establishing itself as a luxury destination in Napa Valley.

Ground was broken in November on the site of the former Silver Rose resort for an 85-room resort with 20 freestanding homes and a fully operational 10,000-case winery.

This is one of three major resort projects in Calistoga in recent years.

On the other side of town, momentum is building for the construction of yet-to-be-named Calistoga Hills, a 110-room hilltop resort originally known as Enchanted Resorts.

In the middle of town, the owner of Indian Springs Resort more than tripled the number of rooms at the historic property and opened a restaurant in 2014.

The two new resorts will generate about 500 new jobs, according to Calistoga Mayor Chris Canning. The number one issue for the resorts will be the same as other businesses in the town, finding employees.

Currently, the unemployment rate in Calistoga is around 2 percent. To help alleviate the problem, an employee shuttle program will begin in May, shuttling employees to and from Santa Rosa. About 300 commute each day, and the program needs about 60 employees to participate. It will be followed by a Napa/Vallejo shuttle, and Middletown/Lake county shuttle.

The yet-to-be-named Calistoga Resort is located on Silverado Trail, directly across from Solage Calistoga. Rates will run at about $1,000 to $1,300 per night. Although the Four Seasons will be managing the resort and renting out the homes, due to a “no formula ordinance,” which means no chain operations are allowed, the name will not include Four Seasons.

The developer, Colorado-based Bald Mountain Development, had hoped to break ground in 2013 and be open sometime in 2015, but now hopes to be open sometime in early 2018. Cost for the 22-acre project is estimated at more than $200 million.

Along with the hotel, the resort will feature single- and two-story villas and 2-4 bedroom private residences. Each will include multiple master suites, an owner’s wine cellar as well as indoor and outdoor dining and entertainment spaces.

The resort comes with a six-acre vineyard, a spa, restaurant a gourmet General Store, estate winery and tasting room, wine cave and private wine library and barrel room. It will integrate grape-to-glass with winemaker Thomas Brown. A limited collection of wines will be produced on-site at the winery.

Bald Mountain has also set up an office in Calistoga on Lincoln Avenue.

This is the third joint project for Bald Mountain and Alcion Ventures, a Boston-based real estate private equity firm. The Napa Valley project is Alcion’s third Four Seasons branded project.

“We set out almost a decade ago to find this kind of opportunity in Napa Valley. Reaching this point is the result of the hard work and passion that Four Seasons and many individuals bring to the partnership,” said Martin Zieff, managing partner at Alcion Ventures.

The project was designed by EDG Interior Architecture+Design. Erin Martin Design is responsible for interior design, and HKS and O’Bryan Partnership, Inc. are also part of the architect team.

On the other side of town, developers hope of the yet-to-be-named Calistoga Hills hope to open the resort by the fall of 2018. It will be managed by the Rosewood Hotel Group.

When completed, it will feature the hotel rooms plus a spa, ballroom, restaurants, 20 fractional-ownership houses, and building sites for up to 13 private houses on 88 acres.

The project is fully entitled for 110 hotel keys, 20 private villa residences and 13 estate homes. The average nightly room rates will be approximately $1,200 a night.

The owner, Hong Kong-based CTF Development International, is nearing agreement with the state on a long-stalled timber harvesting plan required before construction can begin on the heavily wooded hill next to Highway 29, just south of town.

The 88-acre property was purchased in a move said to represent one of the highest “per key” hotel land sales in the country. Although the details of the sale have not been disclosed, the property was put up for sale in June 2014 for $100 million by Christie’s International Real Estate and the property was purchased the following December.
