Two North Coast beverage alcohol business publishers have purchased the publications side of Gomberg, Fredrikson & Associates, a go-to wine industry analytics firm.
San Rafael-based Wine Communications Group, which produces Wines & Vines and Wine Business Monthly, and Santa Rosa-based beverage alcohol adviser BW166 on March 1 said they acquired the part of the Woodside-based firm that produced The Gomberg-Fredrikson Report, the WINEDATA Wine Pricing Report and the Distilled Spirits Pricing Monitor.
Principals Jon and Eileen Fredrikson often are quoted on wine production and sales statistics and trends.
“We are happy to be able to continue the legacy of accurate, exhaustive, in-depth market research and reporting that Jon Fredrikson has so firmly established,” said Hugh Tietjen, chairman of Wine Communications Group, and Jon Moramarco, founder and managing partner of BW166, in a joint statement. “With the considerable additional data and analytical resources that our two companies bring to the deal, the GFA publications will provide even more valuable services.”
Gomberg, Fredrikson principal Jon Fredrikson initially will continue to write The Gomberg-Fredrikson Report. The firm’s clients will continue to receive those reports plus BW166’s industry data reporting and Wines Vines Analytics’ Distributor Market Service, the new owners said.
Novato-based WX (wxbrands.com) owned the Gomberg, Fredrikson publications business since 2000 and marketed the information via a service called TradePulse. Formerly called Winery Exchange, WX unveiled new branding March 1 as it focused on developing and producing national and exclusive wine, beer and spirits brands.
“Gomberg-Fredrikson has been an integral part of the growth of WX into the company we are today,” said Peter Byck, CEO of WX. “We have enjoyed our partnership with Jon and Eileen Fredrikson and wish them continued success going forward.”
The Fredriksons have operated the consulting firm since 1983 and will continue as consulting and real estate practice called Fredrikson & Co.
“We have a great deal of respect for these knowledgeable industry veterans,” Jon Fredrikson said in a statement.
Wines & Vines (winesandvines.com) originally started in 1919, and Wine Business Monthly (winebusiness.com), in 1994. Wine Communications Group also owns Winejobs.com, produces the Wines & Vines Directory & Buyers Guide and Wine Business Insider newsletter, and puts on events such as Innovation + Quality conference, Wine Industry Technology Symposium and Wines & Vines Packaging Conference.
BW166 (bw166.com) publishes The Total Beverage Alcohol Overview and beer, wine and spirits reports. Moramarco has been in senior leadership of wine companies with North Coast interests for decades. He became managing partner of BW 166 in mid-2009, just after leaving Constellation Brands as CEO of international business. He was in CEO positions at Constellation for nearly nine years, including a Napa-based portfolio of luxury brands. Before that, he was with Allied Domecq for 17 years, including nearly eight years as head of the Healdsburg-based U.S. wine business.
