Hotel occupancy shaded to the negative side in Sonoma County in August, the second month in a row to do so, though the size of the declines in both months was less than 1 percent, according to data released Wednesday by travel data firm STR.

Average occupancy in Sonoma County hotel rooms in August was 83.2 percent, just .02 percent below the mark in August, 2017. In July, the decline was .07 percent. That followed a year in which occupancy rate increases in Sonoma County had been positive since January. Revenues year to date through August are at $223.2 million – up 12.9 percent over the same period in 2017.

In Napa County, since May, in monthly comparisons to last year at the same time, the occupancy rates have declined each month since May, anywhere from 1.7 percent to the largest dip, 5.6 percent, in July. Revenues, however, have stayed on the positive side this year in a same monthly comparison, from a high of 5.9 percent in January compared to January 2017 to barely staying in positive range last month with .9 percent boost. The market in Napa County gathered in $274.7 million in hotel revenue through August, a 3.2 percent increase.
