Beginning as Vinquiry wine laboratory in the early days of the modern U.S. wine industry, Enartis USA is now a major supplier of premium winemaking products to the North American wine industry and provides high-quality analytical services through its network of laboratories.

The ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accreditation of the main laboratory in Windsor verifies the high-quality of analytical services provided to clients, which range from basic chemistry testing to most recent analytical technologies such as real time quantitative PCR (PCR panels), oak aroma compounds analysis and grape and wine phenolics analysis, foaming capacity and antioxidant capacity.

In January 2009, Vinquiry wine labs became part of multinational company Esseco Group, which manufactures the Enartis range of premium winemaking products. Being part of a global manufacturer of winemaking products has allowed the company to incorporate advanced technology and develop tailored solutions for the U.S. wine industry. Enartis USA has capabilities for wineries of all sizes.

What major accomplishments of the last year would your company like to highlight?

The acceptance by the FDA of the GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) status of Zenith – a Range of Potassium Polyaspartate based products. Zenith is:

Major customers: Per our ISO 17025:2017 accreditation, we are obliged to full confidentiality. Moreover, it is part of our code of conduct not to use customer portfolio as a sales tool. We only disclose the name of customers who are willing to be testimonials.

Innovation: Six years of research with European institutions

Performance: The most effective tartaric and color stabilizer

Cost-effectiveness: Up to 80 percent savings in energy and water consumption

Sustainability: 90 percent reduction in CO2 emissions

Quality: Respects organoleptic aspects of wine

What is something about your company, and what it does that most people would be surprised to learn?

We have our own soccer team – Enartis WINOS. And that we can predict the quality of the foam of sparkling wine, and we are the only commercial lab doing so in the Americas.

What are your key products and services? Which have been growing the fastest recently?

Products: One of our stars is a unique California yeast isolate, Enartis Ferm WS, isolated almost 30 years ago in a late harvest zinfandel from William Selyem Winery, and that is still a reference yeast for high-quality wines, independently of variety or style. As some say, “100% respect of the fruit” and “eats everything but the barrel”.

The WS has strong competition among its “sisters” (for me yeast are female – delicate, yet determined): the Enartis Ferm D20, isolated in the best block of the “DAOU” Mountain, perfect fermenter for cabernet sauvignon and other Bordeaux varietals, as well the MB15, the distinctive aromatics yeast for pinot noir, isolated from pinot noir grapes from Bannister Wines, and named after Marty Bannister, founder of Vinquiry.

One of our key business services is wine stability: Enartis offers a full range of products targeted to achieve full wine stability, either through the targeted removal of unstable proteins using pharmaceutical grade bentonites (PureBento), preventing oxidation/reduction in bottled or canned wine using specific metal chelating products (Claril HM and Stabyl MET), or ensuring long lasting tartrate stability using the Zenith range of products.

On the services side: We have been a reference for smoke taint markers analysis, but more that testing for taints, we offer testing to measure and predict the potential of the grapes, such as Total Grape Phenolics and Nor-Isoprenoids Panels.

What has been the response to the expedited “smoke taint” testing service via labs in Australia started this fall? What else is in store with that?

We had a good number of customers that have used this service, to validate the service already offered by Enartis. The strong relation of Enartis with the Australian Wine Research Institute is an added value that we can offer to the U.S. wine industry, offering a global perspective and vision.

How do enological tools and high-tech wine analysis fit with artisan winemaking styles?

We say that our customers are Enartists. Art and science are not separate things. Winemakers have relied in their palate and in Mother Nature to create masterpieces. We provide them the chisels to mold the raw stone. Understanding the wine chemistry and microbiology and how it can be modulated to achieve to achieve the perfect wine is what Enartis has to offer.
