Five North Bay hospitals were among more than a thousand nationwide to be named to the fourth annual Top Performers on Key Quality Measures list, released Thursday by an Illinois-based top accreditor of health care organizations.

The Joint Commission recognized NorthBay Medical Center in Fairfield, Novato Community Hospital in Novato, Queen of the Valley Medical Center in Napa, Sutter Santa Rosa Regional Hospital in Santa Rosa and Sutter Solano Medical Center in Fairfield.

They were among 1,224 to make the list, representing 36.9 percent of all Joint Commission--accredited hospitals reporting accountability measure performance data for 2013, according to the organization. It accredited more than 3,300 hospitals nationwide last year.

The Top Performers list is part of The Joint Commission's annual quality and safety report on all accredited hospitals.

The number of institutions on the list grew by 11 percent from last year, despite the addition of two more performance metrics. Missing the list by "only a small margin" were 718 hospitals, the commission said.

The Top Performer program isn't a rating of all aspects of quality of care provided in hospitals, the organization noted. The designation is based on performance measures for heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, perinatal care, surgical care, children’s asthma care, inpatient psychiatric services, venous thromboembolism (VTE) care, stroke care and immunization.

To become a 2013 Top Performer on Key Quality Measures hospitals must have:Achieved a cumulative performance of 95 percent or above across all reported accountability measures.Achieved a performance of 95 percent or above on each and every reported accountability measure where there were at least 30 denominator cases.Had at least one core measure set that had a composite rate of 95 percent or above, and within that measure set, all applicable individual accountability measures had a performance rate of 95 percent or above.
