SANTA ROSA -- Fourth District Sonoma County Supervisor Paul Kelley announced today he will not seek re-election for a fifth term.
Mr. Kelley, who has served on the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors since 1994, said the decision was difficult, but "I have accomplished my goals."
Those accomplishments, he said, included the widening of Highway 101, building and renovating parks and ball fields, creating jobs and improving Sonoma County's economy.
He also pointed to his protection of agriculture and open space, ensuring law officers had the tools they needed to do their jobs and protecting and enhancing water resources.
Mr. Kelley is currently serving as president of the Association of California Water Agencies. There have been rumors that he would replace Randy Poole as the head of the Sonoma County Water Agency after Mr. Poole retires at the end of February. Mr. Kelley has neither confirmed nor denied the rumors.
Mr. Kelley ran against Windsor resident and former town council member Debora Fudge in the last election in 2006 and won narrowly. This year he would have been challenged by Ms. Fudge and Michael McGuire, a member of the Healdsburg City Council and former school board member.
The Fourth District includes Windsor, Healdsburg, Cloverdale and a small unincorporated slice of Mendocino County.
