Mendocino College library under way; Schools Plus sets Oct. 23 fundraiser
Dr. Edna Baehre was named president at Napa Valley College, a year after the death of President Dr. Chris McCarthy.

Dr. Baehre was president of Harrisburg Area Community College in Pennsylvania since 1997 and has experience in community college leadership in both instruction and student services.
Prior to her tenure in Harrisburg, she was vice president for instruction and educational services at Elgin Community College in Illinois and held positions at Highland Community College in Illinois and at Genesee Community College in New York.
She earned her Ph.D. and M.A. at the State University of New York at Buffalo.

A groundbreaking was held for the new Library and Learning Resource Center at Mendocino College in Ukiah on Sept. 8. About 50 people, including the college board of trustees, faculty, staff, students, community members and various elected representatives attended.
President and Superintendent Kathy Lehner moderated the ceremony.
Construction on the 47,000-square-foot building is being done by Midstate Construction and began in June. The building is expected to be ready for occupancy by the spring of 2012.
The event also included a tour of the recently completed East Campus, which relocated the modular buildings out of the way of the new library and created a new landscaped courtyard. A tour of the nearly completed Maintenance Building/Warehouse was also part of the event.
All three of the projects were designed by TLCD.
The key subcontractors on the library are John Benward Co., Peterson Mechanical, M&M Plumbing, S.M. Leslie Electric and Roscoe Steel Co.

Schools Plus is having a fundraising event Oct. 23 at the Friedman Center in Santa Rosa.
A Night Under the Lights will take place at 5 p.m. and have silent and live auctions, performances by the Fondettes and High Speed Wobble and appetizers made by Maria Carrillo High School.
Performances from school arts programs will also be included.
Schools Plus was founded in 1991 when the Santa Rosa city schools were in an earlier budget crisis and spring sports were going to be cut. About $100,000 was raised that year.
“Now Santa Rosa city schools are facing more cuts, and the school board is looking to make cuts in the arts and in spring sports,” said Ted Grafe, a board member of Schools Plus. “This is an ongoing problem.”
The new board promised the city schools to raise $160,000 from June 1 to Dec. 31.
“People are under the impression that somehow sports will never be cut, but the reality is that they are on the line. We don’t consider them to be extracurricular, these are co-curricular,” Mr. Grafe said.

Dominican University of California is hosting an on-campus workshop for CEOs and C-Level executives of small to mid-level privately held companies in the North Bay on Sept. 30.
This CEO program is being hosted by Dominican's Institute For Leadership Studies, which also hosts the distinguished speaker series.
Kevin Takamori, the development officer for Dominican's school of business and leadership said the event is the second in a series of CEO workshops, of which Dominican plans to host two per year.
“Our goal for this program is to build and strengthen relationships between North Bay business leaders and Dominican's School of Business and Leadership.”

Sonoma State University School of Business and Economics is partnering with the Santa Rosa Chamber of Commerce to host the third-annual Career and Internship Expo on Oct. 20 from 5 to 7 p.m.
This year the event is targeting computer and engineering science students as well as business and economics undergrads and MBA students. Participating employers will find talent for internship, part-time and full-time career positions.

University of San Francisco, which has a North Bay campus in Santa Rosa, is offering free CSET single-subject test prep courses for prospective teachers in October at its Sacramento campus. The three days of test preparation will be Oct. 2, 16 and 30 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 630 K St. #200 in Sacramento. Enrollees must attend all three sessions per their assigned subject matter.
Breakfast and lunch is included.
