Marin County: Corte Madera fixture WinCup leaving for Arizona

WinCup, 42 years in Corte Madera, will shut its doors by late June. The maker of Styrofoam cups is consolidating its western region manufacturing operations, according to local WinCup human resources director Jonathan Pardini.

Mr. Pardini said Marin employees will be offered jobs in Tolleson, Ariz. where the Corte Madera operations will be transferred, along with a warehouse operation in Richmond.

According to documents filed with the California Employment Development Department, 104 workers will be laid off from the Corte Madera plant and 15 from Richmond.

Founded as Handi-Kup by Marin businessmen Peter Hunt and his son Joseph and moved to Sausalito in the 1960s, the company grew to 250 employees before being acquired by Georgia-based James River Corp. in the mid-1980s.

For years the operation has been visible to drivers on Hwy. 101 because it generates a plume of steam.

The company occupies about 100,000 square feet in three separate buildings on Tamal Vista.

Currently zoned for industrial use, it’s expected that the city of Corte Madera will re-designate the property to allow the option for the owner to develop it into housing.

The owner of the property said it was too early to talk about development plans.
