Best Places to Work 2014: PEP Housing

PETALUMA -- For 36 years this nationally recognized nonprofit has built and managed truly affordable high-quality rental housing for senior citizens with limited income.

PEP Housing also provides seniors with support services, advocacy and a true sense of belonging with young people. It achieves this through an intergenerational program at a local high school where students and seniors interact while doing line dancing, playing bingo and attending sporting, theatrical and other events.

Seniors also enjoy surrogate grandparent and grandchildren relationships, which helps promote an awareness of ageism.

"Keeping employees engaged and excited about working for PEP Housing is more than giving an extra vacation day or holiday," according to Executive Director Mary Stompe.

"It involves constant acknowledgement of each employee's contribution at staff meetings, in the halls, at events and board meetings. Saying 'you're doing a great job' goes a long way with employees."

Staff members say this is a caring organization striving to make better and more comfortable places for seniors.

"We serve a population that needs help. All of us are dedicated to our seniors. Everyone here has a positive attitude and outlook, always going the extra mile in every situation," an employee said.

Another said, "I've been here only two months, but was immediately considered part of the family -- I even had a welcome sign waiting for me on my office door."
