Best Places to Work 2014: Carlile-Macy

SANTA ROSA -- Started in 1996, Carlile Macy is a team of civil engineers, urban planners, land surveyors and landscape architects.

"In a service organization, it's all about the wonderful staff, which is our greatest asset," said David Hanson, P.E., president. "We hire the best and nurture their careers."

The open communication between management and staff is "refreshing," a manager said. "We're able to work in a team environment that supports individual and career successes."

The average time an employee has been with the firm is nearly 14 years. The 16-employee firm's principals said they know a happy employee is a healthy employee. So they accommodate the family and personal-development needs of workers.

"They allow me to start work at a later time than usual, while I drop off my daughter at school each morning," an employee said. "Also they allow me to take time off work to attend Sonoma State University and pursue my teaching career."

The firm provides snacks, beverages and the daily newspaper in the break room and pays 20 percent of staff members' quarterly dues at the Cool Fitness & Training gym.

Philanthropic pursuits by Carlile-Macy include sponsoring Petaluma's Committee of the Shelterless (COTS), donating its conference room to Sixth Street Playhouse and other local companies and organizations, and participating in the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Light the Night fundraiser walk.
