Contractor expands offices to accommodate growth over 18 years
SANTA ROSA – General engineering contractor Ghilotti Construction Co., one of the North Bay’s largest such companies, significantly upgraded its corporate address as the headquarters staff has outgrown trailers in its main yard over the past 18 years.
The company had 50 employees scattered in modular offices in its equipment and materials yard at the end of Ghilotti Avenue in southwest Santa Rosa. Offices have been at the yard since Richard “Dick” Ghilotti and his cousin, Jim Ghilotti, started the company in 1992.
The company now employs 100 full-time employees and has satellite offices in American Canyon and San Rafael. Revenue last year was $112 million.
Ghilotti Construction has been incorporating green-business practices, such as materials recycling and use of alternative energy sources for vehicles and equipment, so recycling commercial space for offices and storage fit with that, according to John Bly, the new business development manager.
“The green aspect is that we used the existing shell and added insulated glass as well as more insulation and energy-efficient heating and cooling than required by code,” said Mr. Bly.
Other environmentally friendly practices include using a 20 percent biodiesel blend in heavy equipment, picking up job-site timecards with two electric trucks from Santa Rosa-based Zap and recycling about 85 tons annually of “field scrap,” such as asphalt, concrete and baserock. For example, some scrap from the company’s contract to widen Highway 101 through north Santa Rosa was reused at an industrial building site in southeast Santa Rosa.
Working with Petaluma-based commercial general contractor McDevitt & McDevitt, the company transformed a former showroom and distribution facility at the corner of Todd Road and Ghilotti Avenue into 3,500 square feet of offices and a 1,300-square-foot warehouse. Dal-Tile Corp. relocated across the street to Industry West Commerce Center early this year.
