2023 Women in Wine Awards: Inspirational Leader Award
Business milestones helped to achieve: “I started my wine industry career with E & J Gallo Winery on the team that introduced Bartle & James Wine Coolers, a predecessor of today’s ready-to-drink alcoholic beverage category,” Sweeney said.
Sweeney moved to Napa Valley in 2000 to help establish the direct- to-consumer (DTC) channel for Huneeus Vintners at a time when direct shipping was just getting underway.
“Before joining Treasury Wine Estates in 2015, I spent four years with winemaking pioneer Cathy Corison helping her redefine consumer offerings and establish a direct business model that underpins the overall success of wineries today.”
“Now I oversee all of Treasury Americas DTC business and lead a team of about 130 hospitality and direct marketing professionals,” Sweeney said.
She uses her position to help pave the way for others across the business through formal and informal mentorship programs, investing time in the development of next generation leaders, and creating space for team members to grow and innovate in a supportive and safe space.
Being an inspirational leader: For me, inspirational leadership comes down to two key things: The ability to paint a picture of what can be rather than only what is, and an unwavering commitment to honoring your word.”
Sweeney says inspirational leaders give their teams a reason to believe and create a motivating vision of what is possible — leading their teams to something, not through or from something.
“Providing support and encouraging team members to take risks, innovate and chart a new path forward. Instilling trust through transparency in communication and being true to your word are hallmarks of inspirational leaders. If your team trusts you, they will willingly join you on the journey to the future.”
